The “It Won’t Happen to Me!” Problem…
Password this….. Security that….. Now they want a password that has 14 characters with two symbols…..? AND I have to change it every THREE months? Get Hacked? It wont happen to me!
As difficult as it may be to remember 20 different passwords, three PIN numbers and a bunch of new cyber security processes, we still manage to remember most of the things in our lives. The code for the office door and alarm system, the passcode to our phones, the garage code and the list goes on, you get the idea.
However, these numbers are from a time when the most real threats in our lives were thought to be someone bursting in our front door and threatening our families. Did you know in 2018, those types of physical threats were far less statistically prevalent than cybercrime. Matter of fact, data breaches and identity theft are occurring at three times the rate that home burglaries occur in the U.S. according to a 2016 study by the University of Kentucky.
Don’t be the “It wont happen to me!” person, it’s time to start adjusting to the shift in crime. Understand that it CAN happen to you, most likely will happen to you and approach all aspects of physical and cyber security with the attention they deserve.
